In terms of getting around, autos are being favoured over other modes of public transport. Else one would be driving a compact car or a motorcycle. Note that it is not mandatory for a pillion ride to be wearing a safety helmet, for whichever reasons I could not comprehend.

Water, water - We were told only to drink from bottled water in the hotel or reputable restaurants.
Don't be surprised if you see a cow in the city. Or a goat for that matter.
