Spring Cleaning Journal #3

This post can also be called - The Evolution and Extinction of the Floppy.

Introducing the 5¼-inch floppy disk.

Back when we had our first computer eons ago, the only I remembered were obviously the games, and how I kept on removing and inserting the floppy disks so the game can continue loading. One game can have 2 - 3 disks on average. Interesting fact : the floppy disk is invented by IBM.

Then came in the 3½-inch floppy disk.

This one stuck with us for the fairly longer time - through college and my first few working years. I even had funky coloured casings to store those data.

Here's comparing the two. Amazingly the 3½-inch floppy actually stored more data compared to its 5¼-inch counterpart.

There were times we really wanted to back up our data at work but found the capacity of the 3½-inch very small. As a result we had to split the disk into many parts.

Then some time in 2003, our team purchased the iomega zip disk. That time, the zip disk was our savior. However, one thing I didn't like about this disk is because it requires a special external drive. Sometimes we don't know who in the team is having the external drive so we can't back up on time.

All this stopped when we started using CDs to burn the data, and subsequently came the USB thumb drives and external hard drive which made storing, backing up and transferring files much easier.

I think it's going to be a matter of time before these become something that can be found in the museum, so better to keep in my 'Time Capsule' for now...
